House Schwenk, Nürtingen
In the presence of a stately 1921 house declared a monument in 1978, a new 180 m² residence was built on a small, segregated portion of the land. The project's central focus was establishing a respectful yet independent relationship with the historic building—one of dialogue, not submission.

To reinforce this, the street-facing façade is abstract and windowless, with a hidden entrance marked only by a monolithic mailbox and doorbell structure. The result is an enigmatic exterior that invites curiosity.
Inside, a compact vestibule directs circulation: upward to the Piano Nobile, where a concealed kitchen reveals a surprising large window; downward to a semi-underground guest/business area; or laterally to private rooms with views of the garden's underside.
Though modest in size, the house feels expansive thanks to controlled views, diagonal sightlines, and material continuity. Spaces stretch beyond their boundaries, offering a perceptual richness that challenges scale and enhances comfort.
